Church History

On April 23, 1968, fourteen adults, one youth and four ministers met for an organizational meeting at the Orange Garden Community Building, Kissimmee. The group felt it wise to begin with cottage prayer meetings for the summer and the first was held on May 7, 1968 either at the home of Alvin Seyler in Campbell City or at the Holt’s home with eleven present.

Out of these initial meetings, the First Church of God, Kissimmee was birthed and Rev. Robert E. Hurt was called to be the pastor. The new congregation rented the Kissimmee Women’s Club building and the first worship service was held on Sunday February 2, 1969 with 48 people present.

In May of 1969, the congregation purchased 2 1/4 acres of land plus a two bedroom masonry home on N. Michigan Avenue, Kissimmee. In March 1970, there was a ground breaking ceremony and the first worship service was held in the sanctuary on January 30, 1972 with 83 present.

In January 1974, five (5) classrooms and a Sunday School Secretary’s office were added and in 1980, construction started on the Fellowship Hall and that was dedicated on September 12, 1982. On July 25, 1993 the name of the church was changed to the Solid Rock Church of God and as of January 1st, 2017, DBA ‘Solid Rock Community Church.’

When Pastor Dr. Jerry Hickson relocated to Plano Texas in June of 1997 to plant a church, the congregation was without permanent leadership for almost a year. In May 1998, Rev. Whitfield D. Blenman accepted the call to be the pastor and under his leadership, the Lord has blessed the church with significant numerical and spiritual growth and financial stability.

In 2001, a property on Ocean Street was purchased and in 2004 another property on Seminole Avenue was acquired to facilitate the expansion of this ministry, On January 29, 2006, there was a ground breaking ceremony to mark the commencement of construction for a new and modern worship center and in September, another property at the corner of Seminole Avenue and Ocean Street was purchased, allowing the church to own the entire block for the kingdom of God. On the last Sunday in November 2006, we had our first worship service in the new sanctuary and it was dedicated to the glory of God on Sunday January 28, 2007.

As a congregation, we are committed to seeing men and women, boys and girls come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and grow in their walk with Him.

We are excited about the journey ahead and we are grateful for the victories of the past. Yes, we do believe that there is a best that is yet to come and we invite you to come and experience it with us.
